Inside Spencer Shugrue's Bold Journey to Toronto
By far one of my personal favourite articles, my exclusive interview with TMU Bold men's hockey player Spencer Shugrue was a critically acclaimed and award-winning piece. But even for a written piece, there's a lot of process work that goes into such a creative endeavour, so let's dive right in.
The Inside Scoop
As the writer and primary editor for Inside Spencer Shugrue's Bold Journey to Toronto, I had my work cut out for me. What started as just a class assignment turned into a genuine passion project, but for it to progress from a rule-bound assignment to a proper, publicly-published article took a great deal of effort. So let's dive in to how I pulled of this outstanding undertaking.

Trust The Process
This is just a brief look into the vast process work that helps build a professional article.

Pitching pics: for any good article, part of the first draft includes pitching potential images that would compliment your story. For this project, Shugrue had only appeared for a small handful of games meaning a very limited selection of photos of him in TMU gear existed. So, I had to search around the internet to find candid captures of Shugrue during his time at his former WHL club, the Saskatoon Blades, including reaching out to the team themselves for the first picture featured.
First steps, first draft: I've always found the best way to get your creative ideas working is to put them down in writing; this is doubly true for any written works. With my creative process, it's all about drafting and drafting and drafting until you've finally reached a point where you've implemented all of your ideas and feel comfortable sending out what you've made. And even then, a creative's work is never truly done.

Award Worthy
As the title so bluntly explains, this article was an award-winner. Inside Spencer Shugrue's Bold Journey to Toronto claimed Shutter Sports Media's "Most Viewed Article of the Year," despite only being released mid-Fall. This was a massive accomplishment for me, and getting to see one of my favourite projects not only come to life publicly but be awarded as the entire Shutter Sports platform's most viewed article was nothing short of exhilarating and inspiring.
